Dextro-Sang Corporation, a privately owned biopharmaceutical company
based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is developing Dextran-Hemoglobin,
a transfusable blood substitute that can be used to assist patients
suffering blood loss. Laboratory testing has shown good results
in delivering oxygen in animals and the product is currently undergoing
formal pre-clinical testing in Thailand with human clinical trials
scheduled to begin soon. The company is optimistic that
Dextran-Hemoglobin will succeed where other similar approaches have
failed since it is a combination of two proven-safe substances –
Dextran, a recognized plasma expander with five decades of use in
emergency situations, and disease- and virus-free human hemoglobin.
In December 2007 US Patents were granted. Also in March 2008 European Patents were granted.

was developed at the University of Toronto by Dr. Jan Blumenstein and Dr. Jeffrey Wong. Since its initial development, several studies have been conducted to confirm safety and optimize its oxygen delivering capabilities.
In 1998, the developers founded Dextro-Sang Corporation as a vehicle to undertake the commercialization process of Dextran-Hemoglobin. |
